Pizza Delivery Boy - Wii (2010)

by ZenithianHero - March 10, 2013

Cover

The Nintendo Wii's library has the most polarizing reception in the industry as the console is infamous for its shovelware and cash-in titles. Pizza Delivery Boy is an example of a game labeled as shovelware but its concept could have been decent in more capable hands. Created by Attractive Games, a re-branded studio formerly known as Coyote Developments and Probe Entertainment, with Majesco as the publisher. The game is about a pizzeria chain ran by three brothers whose recipe and ingredients were taken by townsfolk due to poor service. Progression is handled by a work day and a free day and the objective is a huge money grind.

Work days involve cooking the pizza and delivering them. To make the pizza you use the pointer to spread sauce, sprinkle cheese haphazardly and dropping vaguely shaped topping on it. Repeat that multiple times. It is a dull minigame with little thrill a video game equivalent of pizza-making could have. The game will let you try and put in toppings without peeking but the penalty of quickening the timer is still too slow to punish you. If you somehow run out of time the pizza will cook regardless of the quality and lose the topping's extra money. More pizza orders will be given as days go by making your task longer and tedious.

Pizza Delivery Boy

The Crazy Taxi inspired delivery segments fare a bit better in fun factor, just not by much. Handling is terrible even when the starting scooter specs tells you otherwise. The cities are huge with placement of objects and traps littered all over leaving only frustration for the player to constantly spinout. Objects that can or cannot break are inconsistent. How can one break sturdy, metal and even large objects into pieces with a scooter but somehow could not break these particular metal crates? Cars driving around will just make the boy slow down and flicker instead of crashing. Orders sometimes will not give you enough time to travel around, should you face a time out money will deduct slowly until three dollars is left (provided that somehow you spend over a minute or so in time out in the first place). Hitting into stinky garbage cans will drain the timer faster, only the garbage cans that are fuming green. Other garbage cans are somehow deemed clean for impact.

Free days involve doing errands for townsfolk. These errands will earn you more money than you earn for your actual job. Other errands will unlock abilities like driving techniques and less time consumed for peeking on an order. None of these give you additional money so you will have to wait for next free day. Mission objectives usually ask you to destroy stuff or collect stuff. Mission descriptions are amusing, like the one where the mayor wants to claim insurance for damage done to the town by natural disasters so he asks you to break stuff. Talk about corruption.
