In nearly every Ys game, Adol gets kidnapped or imprisoned by someone, and it’s up to his partner Dogi to crush some walls and rescue him. Advanced Dogiemon, a doujin game by Circle Mitei finally gives Dogi the starring role in this single screen action-puzzle game. In each stage, you need to crush all of the walls, then touch Adol. At the same time, you need to avoid various enemies, including Feena and Lilia. It’s never explained what this story is – did Feena and Lilia kidnap Adol? Are you merely crushing walls to impress him? All of the characters are represented as heads, which looks extra silly.
Dogi can crush walls that are one-and-a-half tiles away from him. The characters move in half-tile intervals, so you need to carefully position Dogi so he can properly smash some mid-air walls without falling. But like most of these Lode Runner-style puzzle games, there’s often a particular order in which you need to destroy them, or else you’ll end up in an unwinnable situation. In cases like these, you can hit the Escape key to sacrifice a life and restart the stage in its default configuration. You have limited lives, but you can also restart at any completed level. There’s also a stage editor so you can build your own puzzles.
Altogether, it’s pretty typical of 1980s era computer games like Lode Runner, but it uses an undersung character in an amusing way. This was included in Shuwa System Trading’s Doujin Shuusaku Collection Vol. 1.
